Gold River, Vancouver Island- New Camping Adventures

Muchalat Lake, Vancouver Island on a Cloudy Day

Fuel prices soaring everywhere. But I’m not ready to trade my traveller’s life for one built around a concrete foundation just yet. This year’s plans are to enjoy a summer exploring and camping on Vancouver Island instead of travelling East. Vancouver Island is a beautiful place that offers some of the most scenic camping experiences in Canada

Campground Hosting On Vancouver Island, BC

So, when I was offered a campground hosting position at a remote campground on lake on Northern Vancouver Island, I immediately snapped it up. After all, spending summer in the forest, on the shores of a beautiful lake , meeting other campers is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

RV LIFE Trip Wizard

Gold River, BC Is A Quintessential Small Town In Canada

The lake is close to the remote logging town of Gold River. Gold River is about one and a half hours from Campbell RIver. Gold River is small enough that it has the usual assortment of “small town stores’ common to most Canadian small towns. There’s a Field’s store, a few coffee shops, 2 liquor stores, a cannabis shop and a gas station. There’s no grocery store in Gold River, although the old Super Valu grocery store is still there- shelving, buggies and signage still intact.

The Journey Begins

The journey to my new post really began as I drove my 33 fooot Class A motorhome (with Jeep in tow). We were headed to the remote campground where I’d spend the summer. I’d been warned that the road was rough. I drive a Jeep Wrangler so my imagined idea of a rough road could probably surpass most driver’s. That said, I wasn’t sure what to expect, other than that the road wouldn’t be paved.

I took it slow. most of the road was comprised of a series of potholes with strands of gravel road between them. My navigator, Annabelle, normally resident on the passenger seat, retired to the back of the bus.

What Was Broken?

When we finally arrived and parked at our site, I checked the cabinets for broken dishes. Let’s just say was glad I packed the wine glasses carefully in the linen drawer. When I first began RV life, I was urged by Youtubers to buy a set of durable Corelle dishes. Or at least, melamine dishes. Neither of these resonated with me, so I bought a set of Camco Stack-A-Plates. I filled them with my usual porcelain and pottery dishes. So far so good- but for sure something had chipped on this trip. To my delight, everything was still intact. I love it when I can recommend a product that really works well!

And so it begins. To give you, dear reader, an idea of what this new experience is like, I’ll blog as often as I can get internet. Stay tuned and I’ll tell you all about my latest travel and camping adventures with Annabelle and Jolene.
