If packing your RV includes Canadian made alcoholic beverages and/or cheese, you’ll want to pay attention to the latest U.S. import bans. In a baffling new move that targets Canadian snowbirds, US Customs and Border Protection (CCP) has announced a ban on nearly all Canadian made alcoholic beverages. These beverages include:
- packaged beer
- sparkling wine
- many table wines
- cider
- sake
- rum
- vodka
- gin
- certain whiskie
- other spirits.
- Non-alcoholic beer is being affected by this ban.
As of October 02, The CBP hasn’t issued clear guidance on whether individual travellers carrying personal amounts of Canadian alcohol are exempt from the ban. However, the Canadian Snowbirds Association recommends leaving Canadian made alcoholic beverages (or non-alcoholic beer) at home to avoid hassles at the border
In addition, the new batch of restrictions will also affect Canadian made whey protein products, certain other whey products, and Canadian made molasses. All food, agricultural products and alcohol must be declared to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. With that said, it makes sense to bring a minimum of groceries and shop at your favourite US grocery store after getting across the border.
On a side note: Snowbirds who want to explore winter destinations on their trusty Quebec made CanAm Spyder will be out of luck for the foreseeable future, as they too are affected by this new round of banned imports. It could be that Trump has a little motorcycle envy happening…just saying.
